The Aberdeen Area Diversity Committee exists to:

Enrich the quality of life in the Northeast South Dakota area by promoting and supporting diversity, Increase awareness and understanding of individuals with diverse backgrounds and life experiences, Cultivate a welcoming atmosphere in Aberdeen and the surrounding region and Embrace the diversity that already exists in the area.

Goals

A Welcome Center - virtual or physical. A system to ensure that newcomers to Aberdeen will have a single point of access to information. The information might be something as simple as wondering what day is garbage pickup to a more complicated question such as "How do I get a driver's license?"

Outreach - mentoring, guiding, teaching. The AADC will coordinate with churches and volunteers who will walk through day-to-day activities with newcomers to help them become acclimated to the Midwest and the Aberdeen area.

Sustaining the effort - fiscal partnerships, community ownership, networking. For the efforts of the AADC to become self-sustaining, local buy-in is critical. Ensuring a successful diversity initiative requires not only financial support but also a collaboration of efforts by all segments of the community.

Education - ourselves and others, becoming culturally agile, offering ESL opportunities. Helping new residents become a part of the fabric of the community requires a two-pronged approach. First, residents need to become culturally agile via education and open dialogue. The next step is to "help newcomers become neighbors," through education and, again, dialogue.
